Mundo Deportivo newspaper revealed that the Barcelona administration has decided to renew the contract of captain Sergi Roberto for another year.
Roberto’s contract expires at the end of the current season, and all media outlets were expecting his departure, given the departure of Xavi Hernandez, his only supporter in the Catalan club.
But the latest report confirmed that the Barca administration took Xavi’s recommendation about the need for Roberto to continue, and has already informed the player that it wants to extend his stay at Camp Nou.
Negotiations between the 31-year-old and Barcelona to sign a new contract are scheduled to begin within the next few days, and the file will be resolved very soon.
Barca’s management, after research and investigation, was very impressed with how Roberto leads the locker room, and believes that his stay ensures calm given his distinguished relationship with the team’s players.
At the same time, the extension of Roberto’s contract will come with specific financial conditions, which is that he will continue to receive his current modest salary, and some other conditions that will not make him pose any kind of burden on the club’s strained budget.
It remains to be noted that if the player is presented with a new offer, he will agree, as previously announced, even though he recently had an offer from Inter Miami.
