FIFA compensates Barcelona with a huge sum after Araujo’s injury

Spanish newspaper “Sport” has confirmed that FIFA will pay Barcelona a significant amount as compensation for Ronald Araujo’s injury while playing for Uruguay in the 2024 Copa America.

Araujo is out for four months and will undergo surgery after suffering a hamstring tear during Uruguay’s Copa America quarter-final match against Brazil, which Marcelo Bielsa’s team won on penalties.

FIFA is obliged to compensate clubs financially for each day of player injury in tournaments or international breaks if the player’s absence is confirmed for more than three weeks and up to a maximum of one year.

FIFA will therefore pay Barcelona up to €2.5 million in compensation for Araujo’s four-month absence.

This amount could increase to €3 million amid reports that Araujo could be out for at least another month, depending primarily on the player’s recovery speed and response to the treatment program.

This compensation will not be enough for Barcelona, either financially or athletically, as they lose their most important defender and will not be able to buy a replacement. The 24-year-old’s injury has also made it impossible for him to be sold this summer to finance other deals, as was likely to happen.
