Thibaut Courtois justified his mistake in Espanyol’s only goal against Real Madrid on Saturday, saying it was “just bad luck”.
The visitors opened the scoring against the Merengues after Courtois saved a shot with his foot but it was accidentally deflected into his own net.
In the end, Real Madrid managed to win 4-1 and reach 14 points and with it get the runner-up position in La Liga behind Barcelona.
Courtois spoke after the Espanyol match and said: “My teammates are so good that we were able to turn the result around after the goal we conceded due to bad luck.”
He also added: “Thank you for your continuous support at the Bernabéu… Long live Madrid!”
It should be noted that Courtois’ own goal was the first own goal scored by a Real Madrid goalkeeper in the 21st century.
