Thomas Tuchel appointed England coach: Date of first match and contract details

The English Football Association has announced that it has reached an agreement with Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor as manager of the Three Lions.

Southgate had resigned from coaching England after Euro 2024, ending a career that spanned from 2017 but was devoid of any titles with his country.

Lee Carsley was appointed as interim coach until next fall, but the coach made it clear that he did not see him as the ideal choice to coach the England national team permanently.

The English Federation had dreamed of contracting with Pep Guardiola, but in the end it settled on another name.

Who is the new England coach?

According to the official announcement, Thomas Tuchel has already signed contracts to take over as England manager on a permanent basis, succeeding Gareth Southgate.

Tuchel will become the first German coach in history to coach the “Three Lions”.

Tuchel is still under contract with his former club Bayern Munich, but that will not cost England anything, as the German club wants to get rid of the coach’s salary and immediately welcomed the termination of the contract.

According to the statement, Tuchel, 51, will remain England manager until the end of the 2026 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Date of Tuchel’s first match with the England national team

Tuchel asked the English Football Association to start his mission as coach of the national team in early 2025, which was approved.

Accordingly, Lee Carsley will continue as England coach during the next international break in November and will play the matches against Greece and Ireland in the European Nations League on the 14th and 17th.

Tuchel’s first match with the England national team will be next March, and the match will be in the quarter-finals of the European Nations League if the English team passes the group stage, or a friendly if they fail to do so.

Tuchel’s first experience with national teams

Tuchel had never coached any national team in his coaching career before signing for England, making it a somewhat risky experience for both parties.

Tuchel began his career as a professional coach with Mainz in the Bundesliga, where he spent 5 years, before succeeding Jurgen Klopp as coach of Borussia Dortmund in 2015.

Tuchel’s first experience outside Germany was with Paris Saint-Germain in 2018 for two years, then he took over Chelsea for a year, and his last experience was with Bayern Munich in the past season and a half before that.

Thomas Tuchel’s achievements

Tuchel led Mainz to achieve their best season in the history of their participation in the Bundesliga and finished fifth.

With Dortmund, he won the German Cup, while with Paris Saint-Germain he won the French League title twice and the French Cup once, and reached the 2020 Champions League final before losing to Bayern Munich.

With Chelsea, Tuchel achieved his greatest achievement by winning the Champions League title, and won the award for the best coach in the world in 2021.

Finally, with Bayern Munich, he only succeeded in achieving one title, which is the German League, and it was an unsuccessful experience after losing the Bundesliga in the second season for the first time in 11 years, and finished third.
