English football dominance dominated the Champions League after two Premier League teams topped the league stage standings at the end of the third round.
All English clubs succeeded in achieving victory this round, starting with Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Shakhtar, Aston Villa’s 2-0 victory over Bologna, and reaching Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Leipzig, and finally Manchester City’s crushing 5-0 victory over Sparta Prague.
Perhaps the Bundesliga clubs were the weakest of all in this round, as Dortmund, Bayern and Leipzig lost and Leverkusen tied, and the only victory came through Stuttgart at Juventus Stadium.
The presence of the Spanish League clubs was remarkable with the two big victories for Real Madrid and Barcelona, although the surprise of the round may be Atletico Madrid’s fall at the hands of Lille in the heart of the Wanda Metropolitano.
Aston Villa lead the standings with a perfect record, something only their compatriot Liverpool have achieved.
