Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that two of the Reds’ stars will miss the Champions League clash with Real Madrid due to injury.
The Reds will host the Spanish side at Anfield on Wednesday, but before that they will play a crucial Premier League match against Southampton on Sunday.
Slot was asked about his players’ condition at the press conference ahead of the Southampton match, and he replied: “Alisson has returned to training with the goalkeepers’ team, but he has not trained with the team, although he is expected to do so soon.”
He added: “Van Dijk trained with us today, Trent has not, but we expect him to be back very soon, Harvey Elliott is with us now, and Jota is like Chiesa, we expect them to be back in a few weeks.”
As for who will miss the Real Madrid match, Slot replied: “Alisson and Jota will not fly in the Real Madrid match, and we will see what happens with Arnold.”
Liverpool are preparing for a tough week in every sense of the word, as after facing Real Madrid they will host Manchester City in a chance for Pep Guardiola’s first team to reduce the gap with the Premier League leaders.
It is worth noting that Liverpool have only suffered one defeat in all competitions this season, which was against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
The Reds lead the league standings by 5 points from their closest pursuers, in addition to being the only club to achieve a full mark in the Champions League stage after the first 4 rounds.
