A fatal mistake from Courtois and another from Valverde cost Real Madrid a defeat against Bilbao

Real Madrid suffered their second defeat in the Spanish League this season after losing at San Mamés to Athletic Bilbao in round 19.

Perhaps individual mistakes were the main title of the defeat of the royal club against its Basque counterpart, from which its rival Barcelona benefited greatly.

The first mistake was a rare mistake by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after he failed to deal with a cross within reach from Alex Berenguer in the 53rd minute, allowing Bilbao to take the lead with their first goal.

The second mistake came from Kylian Mbappe, who wasted a penalty kick, but fortunately for him, Jude Bellingham was able to equalize the score for Carlo Ancelotti’s team in the 78th minute.

However, a few seconds later, Fede Valverde made a very fatal mistake, when he passed the ball back incorrectly and Bilbao striker Gorka Gorosita received it and stood in front of the goal to easily put it into Courtois’ net.

Thanks to this defeat, Real Madrid lost the chance to lead the Spanish League standings even if they managed to win their postponed match against Valencia in early January.

The Royal Club’s balance froze at 33 points in second place, 4 points behind Barça and one match less for Real, while Bilbao reached 29 points in fourth place.
