Real Madrid’s defeat to Athletic Bilbao and Kylian Mbappe’s penalty miss will increase the pressure on the shoulders of the former Paris Saint-Germain striker after much criticism in recent weeks.
A week after the French star failed to take a penalty in the Champions League against Liverpool, he missed another against Bilbao, as Los Blancos allowed league leaders Barcelona to maintain their four-point lead.
Mbappe said in a post on the social networking site Instagram: “A big mistake in a match where every detail matters. I take full responsibility for it.”
He added: “A difficult moment but the best time to change this situation and show who I am.”
As for Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, he commented on the entire situation, saying: “Obviously Mbappe is sad and disappointed, but he has to continue.”
He continued: “He is not at his best level, but we have to give him time to adapt. He has scored 10 goals and can do better and is working on it.”
“Missing a penalty kick happens, sometimes you score a penalty kick and sometimes you don’t. I won’t judge the performance based on the penalty kick,” he concluded.
