Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has been in Tunisia in the past few days to discuss the possibility of him taking over as national team coach in the coming period.
Queiroz is one of the most prominent national team coaches in the world, and he has previously worked in Africa once by coaching Egypt, where he reached the final of the African Cup of Nations and almost reached the 2022 World Cup.
Tunisian media had previously confirmed that negotiations between Queiroz and Tunisia were in advanced stages.
However, the newspaper “Al-Shorouk” confirmed in a report that negotiations between Queiroz and the Tunisian Ministry of Sports had faltered in the past few hours.
The main reason for this is what the Ministry of Sports saw as “exaggeration” from the coach in the monthly salary he wants to obtain.
Queiroz, on the other hand, believes that he has made great sacrifices and reduced his salary, and there is no room for reducing the salary further.
In this context, it was said that Tunisian President Kais Saied himself intervened and asked the ministry to cancel the negotiations after Queiroz’s proposed salary was 500,000 dinars ($155,000 per month).
Ultimately, the Ministry of Sports acquiesced to the presidential decision and decided to wait until the Tunisian Football Federation elections are held in the coming weeks, after which the new officials will appoint the coach.
It is worth noting that Faouzi Benzarti was in charge of coaching Tunisia but was dismissed before the last international break due to poor results.
