Officially.. Dortmund dismisses Nuri Sahin and announces his replacement

Borussia Dortmund announced on Wednesday morning the dismissal of coach Nuri Sahin following the 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League.

The Turkish coach took over the German club’s training after Edin Terzic last summer, and despite the good start to the season, the results collapsed over the last month in particular.

Dortmund lost their last 4 matches in all competitions at the beginning of 2025, and dropped locally to tenth place in the Bundesliga, in addition to 13th place in the Champions League.

The 36-year-old coach led Dortmund in 27 matches in all competitions, winning 12, losing 11 and drawing 4 others, noting that he bid farewell to the German Cup in the round of 32 at the hands of Wolfsburg.

Dortmund’s U19 coach, Mike Tolberg, will temporarily coach the first team during the Bremen match next Saturday, until a permanent coach is contracted.

Former Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac is the frontrunner to lead Dortmund until the end of the season.

Dortmund management wants to sign a coach from the trio of Erik ten Hag, Roger Schmidt and current Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness, so they prefer to complete the season with an interim coach and then work on bringing one of them to Signal Iduna Park in the summer.
