UEFA has announced the identity of the referee who will officiate the match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
The Frenchman Clement Turpin will be the referee for the match scheduled to be held at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium at 11:00 PM Mecca time next Tuesday.
Real Madrid was defeated by Real Betis on Saturday in the Spanish League, a few days before facing its neighbor, and after the match, Carlo Ancelotti said that playing like this against Atletico would mean an inevitable defeat.
There is no doubt that Turpin’s appointment is a very good omen for Real Madrid, as the royal club has never known defeat in any match that the Frenchman has officiated in the Champions League.
Turpin has previously officiated 8 matches for Real Madrid, winning 7 of them and drawing only one.
Turpin was the referee for Real Madrid’s match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the first leg of the round of 16 play-off, when Los Blancos came from behind twice to win 3-2.
On the other hand, Atletico Madrid’s record with the Frenchman is not good, as he has refereed 6 matches, of which Los Rojiblancos won only 2, with one defeat and three draws.
It is worth noting that Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have met twice in La Liga this season, and both matches ended in a 1-1 draw.
