Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed in an official statement that Florian Wirtz will not be able to participate in Bayern Munich’s second leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
The German international was injured during Leverkusen’s 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen on Saturday in the Bundesliga, and it turned out that the injury was not easy at all.
According to the statement, Wirtz is suffering from a sprained ligament in his right ankle, which will keep him out for weeks.
The 22-year-old is expected to miss Germany’s Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands next week as well.
Leverkusen need to beat Bayern Munich 3-0 after losing the first leg at the Allianz Arena by the same score, after which the two teams will go to extra time and then penalties.
There is no doubt that Wirtz’s absence is a big blow to coach Xabi Alonso’s squad, and the numbers confirm that, as he scored 15 goals and made 13 others this season in all competitions.
