Why was Julian Alvarez’s penalty against Real Madrid disallowed?

The excitement in the Real Madrid vs. Atlético Madrid match extended to the penalty shootout, this time due to a VAR decision.

Julian Alvarez took Atlético Madrid’s second penalty kick, perfectly placing the ball into the roof of the net, unstoppable.

However, everyone was surprised when referee Szymon Marciniak resorted to VAR because Alvarez had slipped while taking the penalty kick.

Why was Julian Alvarez’s penalty kick against Real Madrid disallowed?

Football laws prohibit a player from touching the ball more than once during a penalty kick.

Apparently, after reviewing the various cameras, the VAR referee determined that Alvarez had touched the ball with his left foot first before taking the kick.

Thus, VAR informed the Polish referee that the penalty was invalid, and in this case, it should not be retaken. Instead, it should be considered out of goal. In regular time, if it was a penalty kick, a free kick would be awarded to the goalkeeper.

Ultimately, this penalty was the clear reason for Atletico Madrid’s downfall, as Marcos Llorente then missed, while only Lucas Vazquez missed for Real Madrid, allowing Los Blancos to advance to the quarter-finals.
