Real Madrid finds itself in a real predicament ahead of its La Liga match against Valencia, following a sudden injury to goalkeeper Andriy Lunin that will keep him out for a long period of time.
According to recent reports, the Ukrainian goalkeeper suffered a torn medial muscle during the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Sociedad and forced himself to complete the match.
In principle, Lunin will be out for at least six weeks due to this injury, effectively ending his season with Real Madrid.
With Lunin’s injury, Real Madrid is in a real predicament. Thibaut Courtois is also injured, and there is no intention of risking him until he has fully recovered to be able to protect the Merengues’ goal in the Champions League quarter-final match against Arsenal.
Carlo Ancelotti currently has two options: the first is to give Lunin painkillers and let him play the Valencia match, then begin his recovery. The other option is to rely on 19-year-old Fran Gonzalez as the third-choice goalkeeper.
A final decision has not yet been made, but the trend is to include the young goalkeeper, who enjoys great confidence from Real Madrid’s management. The current situation is seen as an opportunity for him to prove himself, even if the Valencia match at the Santiago Bernabéu will not be an easy test.
