Inter Miami star Luis Suarez has confirmed that Lionel Messi is eager to participate with the Argentine national team in the 2026 World Cup and has no intention of retiring before then.
Suarez has enjoyed a close relationship with Messi since their time together at Barcelona, and their relationship remains strong thanks to their time together in the United States with Inter Miami.
The recently retired Uruguayan player was asked about Messi’s position on participating in the 2026 World Cup, reassuring Argentine fans that Messi is determined to continue until then.
Suarez said, “Retirement? Messi’s desire is clear, and that is to play in the 2026 World Cup with the Argentine national team.”
He added, “I don’t even ask him about it. There are people who don’t understand Leo’s way of thinking, but I know him, and when the time comes, he will decide when he will retire.”
He added, “We are not discussing retirement as a potential plan for him at the moment, or even if it will happen anytime soon.” It’s worth noting that Messi is in the process of renewing his contract for another year with Inter Miami, keeping him in football until at least the end of 2026, six months after the World Cup.
