SM Caen, a club of which Kylian Mbappé is a part owner, has been relegated to the French third division for the first time in 40 years.
It seems that the French international’s week has not been the best. After his Champions League hopes with Real Madrid were shattered, Caenwere defeated 3-0 by Martigues on Friday, officially relegated to the third division for the first time since 1984.
With the worst defensive record in Ligue 2 and only five wins to their name, Caen’ relegation was not unexpected, but it remains a major stain on the club’s storied history.
The anger toward the Mbappé family among Caen fans has been evident recently, as the club’s trajectory has appeared to be in a downward spiral since the Real Madrid star acquired an 80% stake last September.
As results have deteriorated, Caen fans have become more vocal. Protest banners have become a regular sight at home and away matches. Slogans such as “Mbappé, SMC is not your game” were echoed.
This discontent was exacerbated in January when club president Ziad Hammoud—a man appointed by Mbappé’s team—stated that the project was aimed at starting in earnest in the 2025-26 season.
