Bild reported that UEFA is considering several proposals that would significantly alter the new Champions League format.
UEFA previously increased the number of participating teams to 36, while changing the group stage to a single group with each team playing eight matches.
UEFA is considering giving an advantage to the top eight teams who qualify directly for the round of 16 by having all second-leg matches in the knockout stages played at home.
Another proposal under intense consideration is eliminating extra time in the knockout stages and directing ties to penalty shootouts to reduce the physical burden on players.
The third change would prohibit teams from the same country from facing each other in the league stage or round of 16, allowing this to begin with the quarter-finals.
This season’s format allowed two teams from the same country to face each other starting in the Round of 16 play-off stage, resulting in a French clash such as Paris Saint-Germain and Brest.
