A new step confirms Alonso’s proximity to Real Madrid

Bayer Leverkusen has begun preparing for the post-Xabi Alonso era, and it appears they have found their new coach for the pharmaceutical company.

German national team assistant coach Sandro Wagner surprised everyone with his decision to leave the national team after the UEFA Nations League final next June.

Wagner decided to begin his coaching career at a club next season, ending his nearly two-year stint as Julian Nagelsmann’s assistant.

German newspapers immediately linked Wagner’s decision to leave Germany with the likelihood that he would become Leverkusen’s new coach, succeeding Alonso, who is expected to leave for Real Madrid.

Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness was the first candidate to coach Leverkusen after Alonso, before the German decided to renew his contract with the southern club until the summer of 2028.

The second name strongly mentioned was Wagner, and now he’s taking the first step toward confirming he’ll be the coach of Leverkusen next season.

It’s worth noting that Leverkusen CEO Fernando Caro previously announced that his club would understand if Alonso wanted to leave, but hinted that Real Madrid would need to pay a sum of money to make the move happen.
