Kylian Mbappé came on as a second-half substitute in the Real Madrid-Barcelona Clásico and quickly made his mark in the 2025 Copa del Rey final.
Mbappé was unable to start due to his not fully recovering from a sprained ankle two weeks ago against Arsenal.
At halftime, with Real Madrid trailing 1-0 to Pedri, Carlo Ancelotti brought on Mbappé for Brazilian Rodrygo.
Mbappé’s impact was clear. The French international created a great threat to Szczesny’s goal, but luck remained against him and he was unable to find the net.
The situation changed in the 68th minute, when Mbappé’s pace earned him a free kick after Frenkie de Jong brought him down on the edge of the penalty area.
The 25-year-old was set to take the free kick, and he executed a superb shot that bounced off Szczesny’s right post and into the net.
This goal marked Mbappé’s first ever goal from a direct free kick in his career.
The player scored against Leganés from a free kick, but it was not considered a direct goal as the ball was set up for him beforehand and was not a direct shot.
