After Colombia’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay in the 2024 Copa America semi-final, a violent quarrel broke out between the Uruguayan national team players and the fans present at the match stadium in the American city of Charlotte.
The trio, Darwin Nunez, Ronald Araujo, and Jose Jimenez, appeared in the Colombian stands, exchanging blows with the Colombian fans, in a scene that was strongly condemned by CONMEBOL afterward.
Jimenez came out to explain the cause of the crisis, and said, “The actions of some Colombian fans have put the families of the Uruguayan player in real danger.”
He also added, “We had to go to the stands to save our families and children from the Colombian fans who were unconscious due to alcohol abuse.”
He concluded, “The police did not come until half an hour later. There was a disaster about to happen, and the Colombian fans were really acting like fools.”
