The gap between the Reds and City widened to two points, and the surprise lies in the third-place holder, Nottingham Forest, with 19 points, followed by Arsenal in fourth place with 18 points.
Chelsea and Aston Villa have the chance to move further up the table if they win their games on Sunday against Crystal Palace and Manchester United.
