Real Madrid will witness a change in the identity of the team’s captain next season after it was confirmed that the current captain, Nacho Fernandez, has left and moved to the Saudi club Al-Ittihad.
As is usual, each team draws up a list to rank team leaders before the start of each season, and indeed the names have been decided within Carlo Ancelotti’s squad in recent days.
The captain of each team in European clubs is usually chosen by player vote, but at Real Madrid it depends on seniority.
According to the newspaper “Marca”, the captain of Real Madrid next season will be Luka Modric, as he is in his eleventh year with the Royal Club, and more than any other player.
The vice-captain will be Dani Carvajal, while the third captain will be Lucas Vazquez if an agreement is reached with him to renew his contract.
The trio have already worn the Real Madrid captaincy on more than one occasion, but the fourth name that will enter the cockpit will have this experience for the first time in his career.
The talk here will be about Fede Valverde, who is considered the fourth oldest Real Madrid player since he joined the Merengue from Penarol in 2016.
Perhaps Valverde will be more likely to wear the captaincy than the other three, as he is guaranteed a key position in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, unlike Modric and Vazquez, with Carvajal’s many injuries.
It seems that Valverde will experience a big change starting next season. In addition to being the fourth captain, he will wear the number 8 shirt after Toni Kroos retires.
