The Sun newspaper reported that the new management of Manchester United, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has settled on the name of Erik ten Hag’s successor next season.
Although the Dutch coach’s contract still extends until the summer of 2025, his future is at stake and he may be dismissed in light of United’s bad season.
According to the latest report, United have settled on the name of the current England national team coach, Gareth Southgate, to sign a contract with him to lead the team starting next season.
The decision on Southgate’s name came after a series of meetings held by the new management with the club’s legends, during which they all agreed that the Three Lions coach was most suitable for this task.
Southgate’s contract with the England national team expires at the end of 2024, and United are willing to pay the release clause in his contract amounting to 800,000 pounds so that he can start the new season as coach at Old Trafford.
But the biggest crisis remains the cost of dismissing Ten Hag, as the administration will have to compensate him with 10 million euros if he is dismissed next summer.
Southgate’s choice may be very strange, as he only coached Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009, and he failed to win any trophies with England despite his historic generation.
