The Egyptian Football Federation has announced the appointment of German referee Felix Zwayer to officiate the Al Ahly vs. Pyramids match in the 31st round of the Egyptian Premier League.
According to the federation’s statement, Zwayer will be assisted by an all-German refereeing team, including Robert Kimpeter, Yann Zidal, and Sascha Stegemann on video technology.
Zwayer officiated four matches in Euro 2024, two in the group stage and the Romania vs. Netherlands match in the round of 16, and finally the Netherlands vs. England match in the semi-finals.
The German came under heavy criticism after the semi-final match due to the controversial penalty he awarded to Harry Kane, which was a turning point in the match and sent the English to the final.
In general, the 43-year-old referee is one of the most controversial, and it is not forgotten how Jude Bellingham attacked him when he was a player at Borussia Dortmund.
It is worth noting that Zwayer was accused in a betting case in 2005 and was suspended for 6 months because of it. This incident is still a cause of many crises for him in German stadiums.
It is worth noting that Pyramids lead the Egyptian Premier League standings with 68 points from 28 matches, while Al Ahly are in second place with 63 points from 25 matches. If they win this match, they will be close to retaining the league title if they win their remaining postponed matches.
