Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that current Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim is the closest to succeeding Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool coach starting next season.
Xabi Alonso was the first candidate to succeed Klopp, but the Spaniard announced that he rejected the offers made to him by Liverpool and Bayern Munich and would continue for another year with Bayer Leverkusen.
According to Romano, there is a long list that Liverpool CEO Michael Edwards has been studying recently, and at the top of it at the present moment is Amorim.
The Portuguese coach can leave Sporting training in exchange for a penalty clause whose value has not yet been revealed.
But at the same time, the Italian journalist confirmed that there are other names on Liverpool’s list to succeed Klopp, perhaps the most prominent of which is Roberto De Zerbe, the current Brighton coach.
Amorim has succeeded in returning Sporting Lisbon to the platforms since he took over their coach in 2020 while he was still only 35 years old.
Amorim, who is famous for his attacking strategy and approach close to Klopp, won the Portuguese League titles once, the Portuguese Cup 3 times, as well as the Super Cup title once.
This season, Sporting Lisbon is competing for the Portuguese League title, as it occupies second place, only two points behind leaders Benfica, with two games less for the Amorim battalion.
