It has become almost certain that Heung-Min Son will not move to Barcelona after the news confirmed that he is on the Catalan club’s list next summer.
The South Korean international’s contract with Tottenham was due to expire at the end of the current season, and the Barca management viewed the player as a free option with guaranteed quality to support Hansi Flick’s squad next season.
But Tottenham closed the door on all these speculations, after the English management activated the clause to extend Son’s contract for another year, to remain at the Spurs until 2026.
With his continuation for another year, Barcelona will need to pay money to buy Son, which is unlikely given the economic situation of the Blaugrana on the one hand, and the player’s advanced age on the other hand.
Next summer, Barcelona will prefer to spend its limited funds on young players who can be built upon in the future, rather than include a temporary option who will shine for a year or two.
Son is generally considered a Tottenham legend and has always stressed that he wants to continue there until retirement, where he has been active since 2015 and has played 320 matches, during which he scored 115 goals and made 68 others.
