Real Madrid announced in an official statement the details of Ferland Mendy’s latest injury, which he sustained in the El Clásico against Barcelona and left the field after just nine minutes.
The club’s statement read: “Following tests carried out on our player Ferland Mendy by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the proximal rectus femoris tendon in his right quadriceps muscle.”
The statement did not specify the length of Mendy’s absence, but according to journalist Arancha Rodriguez, the French international will be out for two and a half months, effectively ending his season and preventing him from even participating in the Club World Cup.
Mendy thus becomes the third Real Madrid player to see his season end prematurely, following Antonio Rudiger, who underwent surgery on Tuesday, and Eduardo Camavinga.
Mendy’s injury represents a major blow for Real Madrid, as the only available left-back is Fran Garcia, with no replacements.
Real Madrid’s only option would be to return David Alaba to the left-back position, although the Austrian international has so far failed to regain his form after being sidelined for over a year with a torn cruciate ligament.
