Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has decided to rule out André Onana for Sunday’s match against Newcastle following the events in the previous Europa League match against Lyon.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper made two errors, enough to allow the French club to score two goals that ultimately led to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the quarter-finals.
Onana has been subjected to a storm of criticism for his repeated errors this season, and matters were exacerbated by Nemanja Matic’s mocking comments before the Lyon match.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Amorim felt it was time to give Onana some rest to help him forget what happened in the Lyon match and the enormous pressure he was under.
Onana will not even be on the bench for the match at St. James’ Park, and substitute goalkeeper Altay Bayindir will make his first Premier League appearance.
Onana’s rest doesn’t mean he’ll miss out on playing time with the Red Devils. It’s simply a “casual leave,” and he’s expected to be United’s starting goalkeeper for next Thursday’s match against Lyon.
The 29-year-old has made 43 appearances for United in all competitions this season, keeping only 10 clean sheets.
