Al-Ahly practically secured qualification to the round of 16 of the African Champions League after defeating Gor Mahia 3-0 in the first leg of the round of 32 in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
The Red Devils needed only 13 minutes to score against Gor Mahia through defender Rami Rabia, and seconds later Percy Tau scored the second goal.
The South African international returned to score the third goal in the 73rd minute, and with it, the confrontation was completely decided in favor of coach Marcel Koller’s squad.
Al-Ahly is scheduled to host Gor Mahia next Sunday at Cairo International Stadium in the second leg, and with the difference in level, it seems impossible for the Kenyan club to score 3 goals and come back in the result.
The second leg will be Al-Ahly’s last chance to prepare for facing rival Zamalek in the African Super Cup on Friday, September 27, which is scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia.
It remains to be noted that Zamalek’s technical staff, led by Jose Gomez, attended the Al-Ahly and Gor Mahia match from the stands, as the White Knights were also in Kenya after winning 1-0 over the police in the first leg of the Confederation Cup round of 32 on Saturday.
