Spanish press reports reported that Xabi Alonso asked the Bayer Leverkusen management to sign Real Madrid captain Nacho Fernandez, who is expected to leave the ranks of the Royal Club at the end of his contract next summer.
Leverkusen is looking for a world-class center back to support its ranks in light of the frequent news that Jonathan Tah is on his way to leave the BayArena, amid great interest from Bayern Munich in obtaining his signature.
Alonso has a close relationship with Nacho, and after it became clear that he would not renew his contract with Real Madrid, he will try to bring him to Leverkusen to succeed Tah, believing in the experience and outstanding technical capabilities that the 34-year-old possesses that can help his team in the difficult season ahead.
However, Nacho’s position on playing again in Europe remains unknown, as those close to him indicate his desire to leave for America or Saudi Arabia so as not to face Real Madrid again in any tournament.
Leverkusen is not the only club interested in obtaining the signature of the Royal captain, as Inter from last summer was very keen to sign the Spanish star as well.
It is assumed that the distinguished status of Leverkusen and its participation in the Champions League next season, as well as the presence of Xabi Alonso at the helm of its technical leadership, are the incentive that makes Nacho change his previous decision and prefer to continue in Europe and move to the Pharmaceutical Factory Club.
