Sky Sports confirmed that Xabi Alonso informed Bayern Munich’s management of his rejection of the offer to coach the team next season.
The surprise that Sky revealed was that Alonso also informed Bayern officials that he would continue as coach of Bayer Leverkusen, meaning that he would not succeed Jurgen Klopp as coach of Liverpool.
According to the German network, the former Real Madrid star decided to continue for another year at the BayArena, after which he would make another decision about his next step in his career.
Starting in the summer of 2025, any club can sign Alonso for 15 million euros, when the release clause comes into effect according to the contract between the Spanish coach and Leverkusen.
Some analyzes indicate that this move may mean that Alonso is specifically considering succeeding Carlo Ancelotti as coach of Real Madrid in 2025.
The new Italian coach’s contract is extended to 2026, but it is likely that his career at the Santiago Bernabeu will end next season, after which Real Madrid will try to include Alonso in a move that will be beneficial to all parties.
The identity of Bayern Munich’s new coach next season remains unknown, with the name of Ralf Rangnick, the current Austrian national team coach, and Roberto De Zerbe, as other options on Max Eberle’s table.
As for Liverpool, journalist Fabrizio Romano says that it has more than one option, most notably the current coach of Sporting Lisbon, Ruben Amorim.
It is worth noting that Alonso leads Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga standings, 10 points ahead of Bayern Munich, and also reached the semi-finals of the German Cup and the quarter-finals of the European League.
