Bayer Leverkusen escaped its first defeat this season, after emerging with a thrilling draw at Signal Iduna Park against Borussia Dortmund with a score of 1-1 in the 30th round of the Bundesliga.
Xabi Alonso’s squad won the Bundesliga title since the last round, but fatigue played an influential role in Leverkusen’s performance against Dortmund, given the West Ham match in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals last Thursday in London.
Dortmund took the lead through Nicholas Volkrug in the 81st minute, and with it everyone expected that Leverkusen’s historic winning streak had ended, but Stanisic, on loan from Bayern Munich, equalized in the 97th minute.
Thus, the longest unbeaten streak in the history of the five major leagues, recorded by Leverkusen, continues and rises to 45 consecutive matches in all tournaments.
There are only 4 matches left until the end of the Bundesliga, in which Leverkusen will face Stuttgart, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bochum and Augsburg, and if they are not defeated in any of them, Alonso will win the first golden title in the history of the competition as a whole.
It is noteworthy that Leverkusen also qualified for the semi-finals of the Europa League, where it will face Roma, in addition to reaching the German Cup final and will face Kaiserslautern at the end of next May.
