Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez spoke for the first time about the controversial penalty kick in the Real Madrid match, denying that the ball touched his foot twice, as VAR claimed.
Alvarez successfully scored his penalty, but the VAR disallowed it due to footage showing he had touched the ball twice, in violation of football laws. This sparked a controversy that continues to this day.
For the first time, Alvarez commented on what happened, saying, “I’ve watched this incident a thousand times. There’s video from all angles, but the truth is, I didn’t feel I touched the ball twice.”
He added, “Even if I touched the ball twice, it was difficult to realize because it was a very light touch.”
He concluded, “The law should be clearer. I never took advantage of the touch, and when the goalkeeper steps over the line to save, it’s retaken. This one was disallowed! It’s a real shame.”
UEFA announced that it had submitted a request to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to review this law and make it more detailed following the Alvarez incident.
