Sporting Lisbon achieved a historic victory over its guest Manchester City with a score of 4-1, in the fourth round of the Champions League.
The match that was held at the Jose Alvalade Stadium is the last for coach Ruben Amorim as Lisbon’s coach in Europe before moving to coach Manchester United starting from November 11.
Before the match, Amorim had mocked the result, whatever it was, after saying that if he won, he would be looked at like Sir Alex Ferguson, but if he lost, they would say that he is a mediocre coach and not the most suitable for United.
But today, football smiled at Amorim as if he was sending a warning message to all Premier League teams before taking over Manchester United, after winning and deservedly against the champion of the championship for the last 4 seasons.
Manchester City took the lead in the fourth minute through Phil Foden, then Viktor Gyökeres equalized the score from a penalty kick in the 38th minute, to end the first half in a 1-1 draw.
The Swede was undoubtedly the star of the second half, scoring another goal in the 49th minute, before his teammate Araujo doubled Lisbon’s lead in the 46th minute.
Gyökeres scored his third goal from another penalty kick, taking his tally in 2024 to 23 goals in 17 matches in all competitions this season.
Gyökeres now shares the top scorer spot in the Champions League this season with 5 goals, along with Bayern Munich star Harry Kane.
Amorim will leave Sporting Lisbon in third place in the Champions League with 10 points from 3 wins and a draw.
