Ruben Amorim seems to be planning to rely on his fellow countrymen, Portugal, in his attempt to bring Manchester United back into the spotlight.
According to The Sun, Amorim has asked United to sign Nuno Mendes, Paris Saint-Germain’s left-back.
The Portuguese coach was clear that his team needs a left-back as soon as possible due to Luke Shaw’s successive injuries, with no point in relying on Tyrell Malacia.
Amorim has a close relationship with Mendes, as he was the first to give him the opportunity to participate with the Sporting Lisbon first team in 2020, and he believes that he is capable of solving the crisis on the left flank.
Mendes’ contract with Paris Saint-Germain extends until the summer of 2026, noting that renewal negotiations between the two parties have stopped recently after the player informed his club of his desire to leave.
With Mendes keen to leave and Paris willing to let him go next summer rather than leave for free the following year, the chances of a deal happening are growing, especially since the relationship between the two clubs is very good.
United may try to speed things up and close the deal this winter, although it seems very difficult.
Perhaps this is the first step in transforming United from a club that relied on Dutch players, as was the case under former coach Erik ten Hag, to a Portuguese club like Amorim’s nationality!
