It appears that Diego Simeone’s historic era with Atletico Madrid is coming to an end, as the capital club’s management has decided to sack the legendary coach at the end of this season under one condition.
According to El Chiringuito, Simeone will inevitably leave Atletico if they fail to win any titles this season.
Atletico Madrid lost the Champions League after being eliminated in the round of 16 by Real Madrid, effectively eliminating them from the La Liga title race, with the gap to leaders Barcelona widening to nine points.
Simeone’s only hope of staying at the Wanda Metropolitano for another year is to win the Copa del Rey. The Rojiblancos will face Barcelona in the second leg of the semi-final on Wednesday, after the first leg ended in a 4-4 draw.
Atletico Madrid’s management believes they can reach an understanding with Simeone if he fails to win any titles, and agree to terminate his contract, which runs until 2027, by mutual consent, rather than paying his full salary for two years.
