Barcelona aims to bring back the “prodigal son” next summer

Sky Germany reported that Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, is targeting Bayer Leverkusen player Alejandro Grimaldo during the next summer transfer window.

Grimaldo is a Barcelona native, but left the Catalan club in 2016 for Benfica, where he rose to prominence. He then moved to Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

Grimaldo quickly became a key player for coach Xabi Alonso’s squad, particularly known for his exceptional free-kick ability, as well as his intelligent and accurate crosses.

According to the latest report, the 29-year-old is hoping to return to Barcelona, while Deco is looking for a left-back to replace Alejandro Balde and to provide additional competition for the youngster.

Grimaldo is said to want to leave Leverkusen, and there is an amicable agreement between him and the German club’s management to allow him to move specifically to Barcelona if the Catalans knock on the door, for a sum of only €30-40 million.

The question remains about Barcelona’s ability to finance the deal and register the player, given the Catalans’ crisis with Financial Fair Play regulations. It’s also worth noting whether Hansi Flick will approve or reject Deco’s option.

It should be noted that Grimaldo has played 45 matches for Leverkusen this season in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing 12 assists.
