Barcelona decides not to renew Pena’s contract

Mundo Deportivo newspaper revealed that Barcelona’s management has backed down from the idea of renewing goalkeeper Inaki Pena’s contract.

Pena’s contract extends until the summer of 2026, and after his good performances this season, the plan was to renew him with the rest of the stars who renewed, such as Pedri, Coparsi, and others.

But at the present moment, Barcelona’s management is inclined to renew the contract of the other goalkeeper, Szczesny, for another year, and not Pena.

Pena’s relationship with coach Hansi Flick is very tense, and in their last meeting to discuss the reasons for returning him to the bench, something close to a quarrel broke out between them due to the goalkeeper’s anger at the German’s decisions.

Barcelona’s management followed what happened recently, in addition to Flick’s decision to make Szczesny the first goalkeeper until the end of the season, and realized the need to wait before making a final decision regarding Pena.

It is most likely that the 26-year-old will leave Barcelona next summer, as with the return of Ter Stegen and the renewal of Szczesny, he will become the third goalkeeper without any opportunities to participate.

It is worth noting that Peña was Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper since Stegen’s injury until he was late for the technical lecture before the match against Athletic Bilbao in the Super Cup semi-final, at which point Flick decided to keep him out.
