Barcelona loses star for free by decision of Hansi Flick

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has informed the Catalan club’s management that he does not need defender Inigo Martinez.

The Basque defender joined Barcelona last summer, but is currently not on Barcelona’s roster for next season due to financial fair play rules.

According to the latest report, Flick has informed Barcelona that he will not be relying on the 33-year-old centre-back and therefore there is no need to register him in the squad for next season.

Barcelona is currently focusing its efforts, at Flick’s request, on other players such as Nico Williams, Dani Olmo and Mikel Merino, and there is no intention of trying to keep a player out of the reckoning due to the difficult economic situation.

Due to not being registered, Martinez can leave for free to any club during the current summer transfer window.

Spanish media had speculated that Martinez could return to Athletic Bilbao after just one year with Barca, during which he made only 25 appearances without scoring or assisting.
