The newspaper “Sport” reported that the Barcelona administration is very happy with the way Szczesny is dealing with the Catalan club and would like to reward him for that.
The Polish goalkeeper moved to Barcelona last October to replace Ter Stegen after the German goalkeeper suffered a serious injury that will keep him out of the stadiums for 9 months.
Szczesny has not played any official matches with Barça yet in light of the brilliance of the other goalkeeper, Inaki Pena, however his behavior has been admired by everyone at Camp Nou, led by coach Hansi Flick.
According to the Catalan newspaper, the Barcelona administration intends to renew Szczesny’s contract for another year, to remain with the Blaugrana until the summer of 2026 instead of until the end of the current season.
The Barcelona administration fears that Stegen will return from injury with a decline in his level, or that Inaki Pena will leave next summer, so it prefers to keep Szczesny as a safe option in goalkeeping.
Even if Peña doesn’t leave, Barcelona see the benefit of having three strong goalkeepers next season, especially since Szczesny accepts his role and is loved by everyone in the dressing room.
Szczesny had announced his retirement last summer after his contract with Juventus expired, but once he received interest from Barcelona he reversed his decision.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper is expected to make his first appearance for Barça next January in the round of 32 of the King’s Cup, unless Peña is injured or sent off before then.
