Journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the English Football Association informed coach Gareth Southgate that he will continue to lead the England national team, regardless of the outcome of the match between Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Southgate’s contract with the Three Lions expires at the end of 2024, and the English Football Association decided to quickly begin renewal negotiations with the coach as soon as the Euro ends and whatever happens in the Spain match.
FA officials spoke with Southgate in the past hours and clearly informed him that they have full confidence in him, and that he is a fundamental pillar of the national team’s project in the coming years.
In fact, this move angered the English fans, given that Southgate has so far practically failed to perform well with the national team despite his historic generation.
Southgate took over as England coach in 2016, and his most notable achievements were fourth place in the 2018 World Cup and reaching the Euro 2020 final before losing to Italy on penalties.
Southgate will play in the second Euro final, and English officials believe that the 53-year-old coach has succeeded in achieving the goals of the stage, even if the team loses to Spain in the final scheduled to be held at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
