Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has revealed the reason behind his celebration by taking off his shorts during his team’s match against Hoffenheim at the BayArena on Saturday.
The Nigerian striker scored two goals for Leverkusen in the German club’s 4-1 win, and strangely enough, he took off his shorts in front of the fans to celebrate them.
Boniface did not receive a yellow or red card, but he was subjected to a lot of criticism, as fans were astonished by his incomprehensible behavior.
Boniface justified his celebration after the match by saying that it was an imitation of one of the popular things on the TikTok platform.
The player said in statements to Leverkusen’s official website, “I did not mean to upset anyone, I did this celebration in front of our fans, not the fans of the opponent.”
He also added, “It is a trend on TikTok for a big influencer in Nigeria, and I promised him that I would celebrate in this way, and this is the first match I have scored in this season.”
FIFA is expected to move in the coming period to put an end to celebrating in this way, such as imposing a yellow card on anyone who does so, similar to taking off their shirt.
