Egyptian media reported that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) informed Ahmed Sayed Zizo that he won the best player in Africa award before the awards ceremony on Monday in Marrakech.
Zizo traveled with Zamalek President Hussein Labib to Marrakech to attend the ceremony, but the surprise was unexpected for the star of the White Castle that the one who ultimately won the award was Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Williams did not achieve major achievements that would make him the best in the continent, as he only achieved third place with South Africa in the African Cup of Nations last January.
On the other hand, Zizo won the Confederation Cup and the African Super Cup with Zamalek, while Hussein El-Shahat was crowned with the African Champions League title with Al-Ahly.
In the end, Zizo feels very disappointed to be informed that he was the winner and then withdraw the title in an incomprehensible manner, knowing that the winner is determined based on the votes of the coaches and captains of the national teams in the African continent.
The Zamalek star’s anger was evident in the photo he posted on his Instagram account, writing, “It’s not the end, it’s just the beginning of a new challenge, thank you for your support.”
He continued, “We all know how things are going in the African Union, thank you to the family, friends and supporters, I love you all.”
It is worth noting that Williams was crowned with another award in the Best Awards, which is the best goalkeeper in Africa 2024, beating Andre Onana and Yahya Fofana.
