A new setback has struck Inter just days before facing Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals.
The Nerazzurri fell last week in the Coppa Italia semi-finals after a 3-0 defeat to Milan in the second leg, eliminating the competition and their dream of a historic treble.
The biggest setback came on Sunday, when Simone Inzaghi’s side suffered an unexpected defeat to Roma, 1-0, scored by Matthias Süle.
This defeat gives Napoli a chance to take sole possession of the top spot in Serie A if Torino wins in the match scheduled for late Sunday night.
Inter’s tally remains at 70 points, noting that the defeat to Roma is their second consecutive league defeat, following their defeat last round by the same score to Bologna.
In the same vein, Benjamin Pavard left the Roma match with what appeared to be a serious injury, further increasing Inzaghi’s pain ahead of the Barcelona match.
On the other hand, the Catalan club is in excellent form, having won the Copa del Rey on Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid, and is now top of La Liga, four points ahead of the royal club.
