Egyptian Football Association President Hany Abo Rida confirmed that his country aspires to host some of the 2034 World Cup matches.
Saudi Arabia won the bid to host the World Cup for the first time in its history and has already presented a comprehensive project that will make it the first country to host a 64-team World Cup.
During the Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Assembly on Tuesday, Abo Rida asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino before Egypt could host a group of teams on its soil.
Abo Rida said, “Egypt was the first team from outside Europe and America to participate in the World Cup in 1934, and we hope that Infantino will grant us, in our centenary as Africans and Egyptians, the honor of hosting one of the groups in the 2034 World Cup.”
He added, “We are certain that our brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will welcome this.”
He concluded, “We are proud of Africa’s contribution to hosting the World Cup for the second time, and we also trust the capabilities of our sisterly Kingdom of Morocco to deliver an exemplary organization and play a major role in organizing the tournament.”
Geographically, Egypt is very close to Saudi Arabia, separated by the Red Sea. However, the Kingdom’s officials must first accept the idea, after which it must be presented to FIFA for a vote on the FIFA Council.
