Egyptian football legend involved in betting.. and the possibility of his imprisonment

Egyptian football legend Mohamed Zidan has been under fire in the past hours after his involvement with a betting company.

Egyptian football has been suffering from a betting crisis in recent years after it swept the Egyptian street, which forced the media to impose a major campaign to stop electronic betting platforms.

Despite all this, one of the betting companies announced in an official statement that it is proud to announce its entry into a new partnership with the Egyptian Zidan.

The announcement included the confirmation that the former Borussia Dortmund star will work as an ambassador for the company in Egypt as he is one of the most important legends of Egyptian football in the last 30 years.

Immediately, criticism poured in against Zidan, who is likely to be arrested if his relationship with this company is proven in light of the Egyptian laws criminalizing dealing with betting in any form.

The Egyptian Attorney General had opened an investigation on October 17 into betting activities conducted via electronic applications, considering it a flagrant violation of the law, after the matter had greatly increased and caused many crises for many people.

Egyptian law criminalizes all gambling and betting games and considers them a threat to the interests of the public that does not accept leniency, and in the event that gambling or betting is proven, the person becomes subject to a prison sentence of no less than 3 years.

In addition to criminalizing it by law, the Islamic religion also prohibits betting, all of which caused a fierce attack against Zidane, who has not commented positively or negatively on the matter so far.

It is worth noting that Zidan played 41 international matches with the Egyptian national team, during which he scored 10 goals, and was one of the most important reasons for the Pharaohs’ coronation with the 2008 and 2010 African Cups of Nations, in addition to his historical levels in the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa.
