German football legend and close friend of Hansi Flick, Lothar Matthaus, claimed that Barcelona’s new coach wants to include German players in the Catalan club as soon as possible.
Barcelona announced on Wednesday that Flick would take over as coach of Barca with an extended two-year contract, succeeding sacked coach Xavi Hernandez.
In an interview reported by Mundo Deportivo newspaper, Matthews said, “He will meet his old friends again in Barcelona, such as Stegen, Gundogan, and Lewandowski, and perhaps he will take one or two others with him.”
He also added, “Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala are the ones he wants to sign. He has a desire for many players, but Barcelona’s financial crisis remains the obstacle.”
He concluded, “Flick is very much looking forward to working in Spain. He spent time there with his family. I am really happy for him to take over as Barcelona coach after everything he went through with Bayern Munich and the German national team.”
It is noteworthy that this is Flick’s first experience outside Germany as a coach, and comes after his failure with the German German Federation and his dismissal last September.
