Chelsea and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez live-streamed a video on his Instagram account with his national team teammates celebrating their 2024 Copa America title from inside the team bus. This video sparked a major controversy as it included racist remarks from the Argentine players towards French players of African descent.
The French Football Federation (FFF) filed an official complaint against the Argentine players with FIFA over the video. However, the matter did not stop at the national level, but also caused a stir within clubs.
According to English newspapers, French Chelsea players are furious with Fernandez, to the extent that Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto, and Axel Disasi have unfollowed the Argentine player on social media.
Fofana commented on the video on his account and wrote “Football 2024: Unrestrained racism.”
Chelsea has decided to open an urgent investigation into what happened, which could ultimately end in Fernandez’s suspension. Some have even predicted that this could be the end of the Argentine’s career at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez, for his part, issued a statement apologizing for what happened, saying “The song contains violent language and there is really no excuse for using these words.”
He added, “I am truly sorry, I stand against all forms of discrimination. This video and these words do not truly reflect my personality.”
It is worth noting that Lionel Messi was not on the bus during the chanting, nor were other stars such as Emiliano Martinez and Alexis Mac Allister.
