Al-Riyadiah newspaper confirmed that officials of the Saudi Football Federation have backed down from the idea of holding the Super Cup next August in China.
Earlier, Saudi officials agreed with their counterparts in China to hold the competition there, but the newspaper confirms that this agreement was canceled in the past hours.
The Saudi Federation received many offers to hold the Super Cup outside the country, most notably from Qatar, which pledged to hold the matches in the 2022 World Cup stadiums.
Although the Qatari offer still stands, the current trend within the Saudi Federation is to hold the Super Cup within Saudi territory, specifically in the cities of Abha and Taif.
The Saudi Federation aims to develop domestic tourism and take advantage of the fact that the atmosphere in Abha and Taif during the month of August is good and distinctive for playing football.
It is noteworthy that Abha and Taif hosted the Arab Club Championship last summer at the same time as well, and the stadiums and stands appeared in a very distinctive look at that time.
The Saudi Super Cup is scheduled to be held in mid-August, where Al-Hilal will play Al-Ahly and Al-Nasr will meet Al-Taawoun in the semi-finals.
The last edition of the Saudi Super Cup was held on UAE soil, and Al Hilal won it after defeating Al Nassr in the semi-finals and then defeating Al Ittihad in the final match.
