In an unexpected and controversial move, French star Kylian Mbappé, who recently transferred to Real Madrid, has acquired a significant stake in Stade Malherbe Caen, a second-division club in France.
According to the French newspaper “Le Parisien”, Mbappé will become the club’s main owner after purchasing a large share of its stock for around 20 million euros.
This process is not new, but has been ongoing for months, led by Mbappé’s mother, Fayza Lamari, to buy shares from the American investment fund, which amounted to 80% compared to 20% for Pierre-Antoine Capton, the chairman of the board.
Mbappé has a historical connection to Caen, as the player passed the club’s trials in 2013 and was almost bought for 200,000 euros, but the then 15-year-old decided to join Monaco in the end.
The first steps of the Mbappé family in Caen will be to meet Alexandre Mendy, Caen’s top scorer last season who wants to leave for Sunderland, but the deal has been temporarily halted after the intervention of the new owners.
Thus, Kylian Mbappé will become the youngest owner of a European club, at just 25 years old.
